If only this had been posted a month earlier! I got past the first hurdle eventually, and slipstreamed the SATA drivers onto a boot disk, and promply bricked up the machine.

They sent it away and replaced the HDD, it is now as good as new.

The solution for me was to exchange the hard disk in the machine for an alternative one and then it worked again no problem. If only it were that easy.

To get the normal letters, I have to press the blue Fn key. How do I fix this? I have never experienced this before with any other computer or laptop and do not know if it is peculiar to Phillips X54 or is it a quirk in freeventts software installed?
